During the Regional Standard Bearer’s Competition earlier this year, Wiltshire County Chairman, Mrs Marie Nunn MBE, promised Wiltshire Standard Bearer, Amanda Bearyman, that if she won, money would be raised for a new Standard.

Chairman's ChallengeAmanda won, and ideas on how funds could be raised began pouring in. Bungee jumping was a definite no as Marie is terrified of heights, a thousand mile motorbike ride with the RBL Riders received another “no”, as a ten minutes cruise on the back of a bike at County Conference a couple of years ago had provided more than enough excitement for Marie. Eventually a sponsored cycle on an exercise bike was agreed upon and Marie began to put the wheels in motion to raise funds towards a new Standard.

The Sponsored cycle was arranged to take place at the Shire Shopping Centre in Trowbridge on the 4th October, and at 9.30am a whistle blew and Marie began her cycle. As well as Marie, her back-up team consisted of Sandy Perry, Wiltshire County Secretary, Julie Carter who looks after Holding Branch Members and Melissa Butt a young member of Bratton Branch. The plan was to cycle from 9.30am to 4.30pm, so each time Marie cycled for thirty minutes, one of the back-up team would then cycle for fifteen minutes to give her a break. Melksham Standard Bearer, Shirley West, and RBL Rider’s Representative, Jacky Bonner, also provided support for the whole day.

Mayor at Chairman's ChallengeDuring the morning the Mayor and Mayoress of Trowbridge visited, with the Mayor taking the opportunity to have a spin on the bike! Branch Members from all over the County also visited the shopping centre to show their support, which was greatly appreciated by the ladies. Amanda Bearyman even managed to come over from Chisledon and had a cycle!

Total miles cycled were 129 and £180 was raised. This along with other donations should enable Wiltshire County to buy a new Standard for Amanda to proudly carry!

Wiltshire County would like to thank everyone involved in the Chairman’s Challenge for their help.
